Open Source Software and India

Open Source spreading roots

Open Source spreading roots

What is OSS?

There are two ways to define this OSS or open source Software. One purely technical, well suited for all those developers cum lawyers cum historians. Other, in layman or hobbyist or KISS way, the way in which we Indians generally like it. I, being a patriotic Indian, like the second one. However, to prevent the people of first category from disappointment, I would give them a full blown definition and then leave the rest of work on open source initiative:

“Open source software (OSS) is defined as computer software for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain. This permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms”

For further technical stuff about OSS  readers can check out the Open Source Definition (OSD), Open Source Initiative and its relationship (or confrontation) with the eldest of all :FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) or FLOSS (Free, Libre and Open Source Software ). For further research you can also check out Open Source resource in resources.

Board Exams to be Scrapped-Old Habits Die Hard

Thanks Kapil Uncle

Thanks Kapil Uncle

I was once listening to one of the Osho’s dialogues on tape in the Osho meditation centre. Although quite skeptical to his views then, I was however impressed by one of his arguments. The context was about solving all the worldly problems caused due to human frustration and suppression of desire. What Osho was suggesting was total freedom to human. No bondages what so ever. I, like that questioner, was quite baffled with this answer. What if the humans went out of control? Desires set free will cause wild fires all through the world. There would be nothing but chaos everywhere. But that silent giant quieted all our queries. He sarcastically remarked, “Has all the control of your society till this time done anything good to humanity. Aren’t there crimes, violence, conspiracies, violence etc. everywhere? Covering the mouth of volcano is not the solution. Let the man free. Soon all his desires will dry and he will find the peace which is birth right.”

“So, if the solution is so easy then why not the society adopts it .”, asked the questioner. “Because, society is habituated to this control. And old habits die hard.” was the answer.

After so many years of pain and agony borne by the tender minds of Indian children at last one man has shown the courage to free them from this non-essential hell. Kapil Sibbal, the man of the hour, is determined to scrap the 10th board exam (… and perhaps 12th too). Only prayer to God is now that this bill passes without any hassle in parliament and all state boards nod their head on it. However, what amazes me most that there are some people who are still against this noble step. Notably this opposing lobby mostly consists of teachers and principals. We can understand their pain. How, in the name of God, will they be able to scare and control the children now? Their whole business was based on the paradigm of feeding these innocent minds with all the cramming so as to vomit them in the answer sheets in board exams. It was the whole issue of prestige for them when they could present their meritorious students as trophies in all forms of media so as to draw more students to their butcher shop.

However as Amritya Sen point out in his book “Argumentative Indians”, we Indians are fond of debating all the issues under the Sun. So like a competent adversary I would like to blast all the funny arguments put forth against this bill.

  • It will degrade our education system:

It’s lamest of all the arguments. Since our independence we are running this white collar producing machine invented by British also known as education system without any commendable changes (…leaving the Rajiv Gandhi era, who first understood the plight of children of this country and brought changes much awaited.) Even the British have abandoned this silly marks based system to adopt grading and pointer system. Also the antonym of degradation is up gradation. Now, pray, all those intelligentsia against the bill, when was the last time your education system was updated. Whereas foreign students have innumerable choice of subjects including specialized ones, we are still in the Bermuda triangle of science, commerce and arts. Also, what about all those age-old laboratories? With the constant focus towards cracking the written exams and the practical marks in hand of institutes, labs are the areas which have been neglected most. Also check out your course material. Being a geek, at least I can comment on the IT facet of education. Frankly speaking nothing noteworthy is present in that prehistoric syllabus. This may be one of the reasons whereas the West produces IT wizkids in teens ours understand the computers in post graduation. I won’t speak about the sports. It appears to be officially out of Indian education system; a serious crime against the hallowed cradle of board merits. Summarily, how can one downgrade a system which is already so downgraded?

  • We need a common standard to judge all students:

A very simple answer, “Everyone is unique”. Nothing can be more flawed than judging two persons on same criterions. You may be good at arts, I may be at Maths. However the irony of matter is that we both have to take exam for History, a specialty of some other student. Let’s understand this contradiction with some other example. Imagine our defense force consisted with only air forces, no navy, territorial force etc. Why because there is only one standard: Everyone should know flying. What comedic and harmful defense that might be. Even a person with slight acquaintance with chess might know that every piece is special and it’s their combination that creates the magic. But who will make our intelligentsia aware of this fact. According to them everyone should know everything. They might learn from those Russian or Chinese gymnasts who are disciplined and focused on their talent since their early childhood to a point that they might remain ignorant about other subjects (…most of them can’t even speak basic English). However, they do bring gold to their countries. And here are we, 2 billion in strength but one Gold. Why? Simply, because our children were busy preparing for their board examinations or something similar. God, may these opponents of bill be enlightened about something called personality tests (Myer Brigg’s for e.g.). Person does best in area he likes rather than he is forced too.

  • What about the competition:

It’s the ace in the opponent’s deck. Use “the survival of the fittest” card. Its scientific, it’s logical, it’s a total bombshell on all those freedom lovers. But, sadly, they are again mistaken. Mistaken, how history has been in understanding Darwin. First of all when he said fittest he meant FITTEST and not strongest or some sort of mass murderer. It included those individuals who could use their inherent talent to survive the adverse situation and continue their heritage. He never meant creation of someone like Hitler, the super-man, the best of all. “Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer“, sounds so similar to, “One student, One Board, One topper”. And the result of such megalomania we know very well. Secondly, it was the conclusion of his research on all species still in their basic wild surrounding. We are no longer some wild animals. We believe in shedding violence for betterment of society. Then why this violence in form of tension, depression, low self esteem on the little innocent minds. Or, are we still beast inside feeding on their agonies so as to forget ours.

  • We won’t change:

Don’t be surprised by such argument. Probably it will be the one most heard. It’s very typical of all those in power; the dictatorship of Iran is latest eg. This reminds me of one of the Dickens’ story. A prisoner after spending 20-30 years in prison is afterwards found not guilty of his crime. He is then set free with words of regret. After taking his belonging he walks out of the main gate in to the free world for the first time in so many years. Suddenly a whole flash of sunlight falls on him. Breezes of freedom touch his skin. His feet start to tremble. Suddenly, he turns back and runs back in to prison. Guards become totally astonished with his step and ask him for explanation. With tears in his eyes and fear on face he replies,” I am habituated to prison. I can’t face freedom. I can’t change.” Most of you might have understood what I am hinting at. But the times have changed. You can’t control with brutal force alone. Sooner or later a tsunami of fresh and young minds will come who will overthrow this rotting system once and for all. Fall of board exams is just the beginning.

Top three horror movies I saw recently

Well as shared in last post I will be moving to Warangal next month. So left to do nothing I went on a movie spree. I have already finished a huge chunk of movies (mostly horror, action and comedy, genres best suited for Indian men). Still a huge amount is lying there in hard disk and DVDs… Really entertainment if taken as goal does require hard work. Any how I sincerely wanted to share these three movies with you which I found above par in world of horror. Well frankly I am horror movies’ freak. I have nearly completed all those top 50 lists of best horror movies out there (which sadly always tops with the Psycho, Hitchcock’s classic. Classics are always golden but some new ones really go beyond it.) So without any further here they are:

3. The Shutter (2004)

The most terrifying images are the ones that are real.”

This Thai horror is for all those who liked grudge. However I need to warn you its way more terrifying.

Pease don’t confuse it with our desi flick tasveer, although camera plays a crucial role here also. In one line, the story is about a young couple with a close group of friends who start dying one by one and even the couple witness the strange events especially with the pictures associated with them. And then comes ghost etc. etc. (don’t want to spoil the fun by giving story awayJ)

Although all these Asian ghosts nearly look alike with their dark eyes and white faces and the freakish way of crawling, what this flick differs at is presentation. The eerie and suspenseful environment is created right from the beginning and goes till the end. Two most bizarre features of this movie are perhaps the anti-climax and the relationship of the ghost with the hero (or rather anti-hero). The moment you think you have reached happy ending the mystery goes deeper. However the really epitome of the movie is when the hero finds out where the ghost actually is (SPOILER* right on his shoulder* god dammit , you won’t be able to view the mirror for at least two days…)

P.S.: Don’t confuse this movie with its Hollywood remake of same name. That movie is total crap.

2. The Thing (1982)

“Man is The Warmest Place to Hide”.

This John Carpenter’s classic is probably the best thing happened in my life recently. Ever since I played the PC game the Thing I wanted to see this movie. Seriously it was cooler than the game (unlike hitman and halo). This movie was way ahead of its time in all respect whether it be cinematography, direction, acting or even the representation of grose aliens. It was really tough for me to chose between the Thing and Alien. However the sheer tension which the movie builds and maintains all through makes the Thing a clear winner. Beside quality even quantity wise the Thing cruises far ahead of Alien in the body count (…have NOT included all the slaughtered dogs here.), Alien encounter and mutating bodies. Also all that Antarctica’s icy winds really send shivers down the spine. It’s a must for all those sci-fi, horror and aliens’ fan out there.

1. The Mist (2007)

“Sure, as long as the machines are working and you can dial 911. But you take those things away, you throw people in the dark, you scare the shit out of them – no more rules.”

This movie based on the novella of the same name by Stephen King is perhaps the only underdogs among all these giants (… maybe due to King’s name attached with it.).

However giving it all the due respects it deserves it’s probably the best horror flick of the modern times. Although due to its name terribly close to fog and the starting with regular supermarket trapped town people, this movie may at first give one a sense a déjà vu. What next? Zombies or some aliens … huge amount of bloodshed … one survivor at the end (mostly a kind hearted but tough blonde) and the end. NO. The similarity ends at the supermarket. Once the mist starts rolling out with all the hidden surprises you won’t be able to leave your seat. Continuous horror in form of creepy monsters from other dimensions and the wild reaction of trapped people to this tragedy is really gripping. More than the monster it was the totally self centered and dangerous nature of human beings under the constant threat to life which frightened me more. Especially the scene when a lady asks for help to every man in the market to escort her to home where her two children including a baby were waiting. But the constant presence of death in mist outside sucks all the chivalry out of them. The best performance was given by Marcia Gay Harden in form of religious fanatic who gives a totally religious angle to this scientific blunder and ultimately succeeds in making the people believe her crap.

Really it’s tough to single out the best elements in the flick as everything is superb in its place. Music is awesome. You will really go for the soundtracks once you see the movie. The darkness both externally and internally of each character is flawlessly presented. As if that was not enough the ending is so gloomy and anti climax that it will surely leave you aghast with that pricking dissatisfaction for the rest of night. It’s probably the only movie which scared the hell out of me for the whole time but left with tears. A must for any horror freak, for that matter any one with good taste for movies.

Finally going to NIT Warangal

After the excruciating two days of counselling at MANIT Allahabad finally I got the allotment in NIT Warangal… Although like most of the aspirants there, my first choice was Trichy but with all those reservations for OBC, SC/ST, PH, J&K, TN what  was left for open category was just 22 seats. So as Dhoni says in his ad “aaj tak hame jo sikhaya gaya hai… jo mil raha hai ussese santusht raho” (What we have been taught until today is to feel satisfied with what we have got ;-) ). So, I agreed on my second choice i.e. Warangal.

Now that the topic of reservations is at the table what I would like to share with you one funny incidence that happened there… The total seats for the open category got closed around 600 whereas one of the SC/ST boy there with the rank 600 something got Warangal :-0. Another humorous irony happened with my friend. He got Bhopal in the off campus online counseling. However he cursed Bhopal all through the counseling procedure and found all the fault and follies. However as the events took strange turn and in the final allotment he was awarded NIT Durgapur, a choice far below even Bhopal. And now he is praying to God that he somehow gets Bhopal in second round.

Although funny for others but this fateful turn of events were heart-breaking not only for him but for many others especially below rank 150. They receded about two -three choices below which were available during off campus online counseling. All the reasons possible from conspiracy theories to hyper cyber hacking were being mused. I came up with alien intervention but the idea was discarded summarily :-( . Well, jokes apart, the unexpected allotments were very painful and I really pray to God that in the second round all those miserable souls get there desired choice.

Also before leaving I would like to mention that Bhopal was too hot last two days… And when a Rajasthani tells you that its hot then it means really very HOT. Moreover the humidity did the remaining torture. Just imagine, standing in a line nearly two hundred people strong, that too pushing each other to get ahead even though everyone has respective token numbers. Two instincts which all Indians have inherited from generations are pushing in line for no reason and to bisect the line now and then till they become a parallel set of infinite lines.

One important thing to share: As I have not found any good online coaching guide on net for cracking MCA entrances I would like to create some for the benefits of MCA entrace aspirants. Rather than just throwing out loads of question papers I would like to share some  practicals tips and strategy. I will also try my best to get some other toppers of different MCA institutes to share their secrets with you. Keep checking for updates in this regard.

Two Cats and a Monkey

Maoist -Ready to pounce

Maoist -Ready to pounce

So the TOI puts it as Red Vs. Red. Well I don’t satisfy with it. It’s more of the nanny-story about the two foolish cats fighting over bread and a clever monkey who steals it away from them in name of proper division. Well, as you may have guessed until now the two cats here are the Congress and the CPM and the wise monkey is of course the Maoists.

When Congress swayed elections with such a huge margin I took a sigh of relief imagining that at least now the India will be undivided. However the present complications in Lalgarh have proved me fantastically wrong (… well I ain’t a taro card reader). Fantastically, because I missed a small contradiction in the equation: contradiction between the party at the Centre and the State. Situation became worse not only because of the Maoists in Bengal but due to friction between the Congress and CPM in the state. Maoists took the ingenious benefit like the monkey with not only huge armed cadre force but also hundreds of villages in their control.

What CPM is paying now is the price of their past crimes against the people who brought it in to power in the first place. They first filled the mob’s mind with their poor friendly, anti-bourgeoisie and violent ideas and then tried to whip and control them by force whilst they shifted towards pragmatic and profit motivated principles. You can’t have the sweets in both hands as the hindi saying goes. And Nandigram proved it right. Now they have to fight their own kind. Just imagine the joy Hitler could have felt if he would have been living to see this day (…of course there would have not been any

CPM -SOS

CPM -SOS

communist left then :-) ). After the Nandigram incidence and the attack on CM and Paswan’s caravan they used an insane brutal force in panic on the locals. I got the first hand descriptions of the atrocities they unleashed. Cops dragged the innocent villagers out of their houses. They were beaten brutally and sometimes even shot at point blank in front of their fellow villagers just for the sake of gallantry medals and satisfaction of the egos of the leaders. Incidences such of those of killing of merit holder students in the name of anti-Maoist operations can really infuriate any one. So are the insane beatings of tribes women. Ironically, same cops are now hiding in their police stations while the tribes’ people are burning the streets. CPM of course is helpless before the monster it created. Even with the whole cadre and CRPF forces it has access to it can’t save even its own leaders. Its only hope lies with the centre.

Congress on the other hand is visualizing it as an unasked gift from the sky. Other than

Congress -Empty handed

Congress -Empty handed

playing the blame game it has thrown all the responsibilities on the state government shoulders’. It’s ironic as this was the same party whose elected prime minister declared Naxalites as the biggest nuisance for India (… this include terrorism in Kashmir). Why such change of attitude? Let’s check it out mathematically. Just follow me in this simple equation:

By level of precedence according to Congress:

Naxals > Kashmiri terrorists

However,

Kashmiri terrorism = Action by Indian militia + commando force + CRPF + bomb squads + …

Naxals in Bengal= Action by CRPF and rest with the state and the good lord.

Also,

Jammu and Kashmir=National Conference (ally of Congress)

West Bengal=CPM (opposition to Congress)

Thus Contradiction proved.

However what both of them are forgetting is the wise monkey. Maoists are not just any rowdy extremists. They are armed forces with structured network. Moreover, they have now spread to nearly 40 percent of country’s land area. Their pure domination i.e. Naxalite belt currently around 92000sq. km. is way more than those of LTTE in Sri Lanka. To further worsen the matter since Nandigram incidence they have now even won the heart of local tribes, parties like TC. Nepal has seen the fall of an ancient and powerful empire in front of these Maoists. The biggest blunder CPM has committed is giving them a right reason to fight for. Congress is also committing a great felony by not containing them at the right time. LTTE cost a good many decades and 90000 lives before being completely eradicated. If that’s what Indian government wants then good for them. A serious round of talks with the Maoist leader at the central level and post demilitarization of their armed forces could solve the matter now. Else wait for the worse.

Sex and the Shiney

I was having my usual evening cup of tea in khokha today, when i overheard a group of senior students from another hostel. I’m not using their names.

K: .. did you guys come across the hottest news of the day??

L: .. (ignores..)

H:.. why don’t you enlighten us?

L:.. (ignores.. )

K: that Gangster waala hero… he raped his maid man.. in jail now..

L: chhii.. maid? How sick of him man.. Didn’t even spare the maid..

H: Why? Who else did he bang? (lol)

L: Arey.. I meant that he should maintain some sort of dignity man.

H: So you mean to say raping a “maid” is losing dignity? How sick are you then?

L: (retorts) So would you bang your maid?

H: Why not? If she agrees.. I could even pay her. As a matter of fact i think that guy would have refused to pay, that is why she charged him for rape.

K: I think its just another way for cheap girls to come in the news.

H: And how cheap are those cheap girls? I heard you had a fuck for just 180 bucks in Delhi last year. Is it the minima?

K: Shut up!

L: There is nothing wrong with paid sex man.. We help them, they help us.

H: Sex sex sex.. Do you guys never get bored of thinking about sex?

K: Are you nuts?

L: One can only crave for good girls in IIT.

H: yeah.. so you go out and bang the cheapest “mallu”?

L: Whatever man, i have a wish.. i want to bang a xxx girl once in my life.. just anyhow.. saare paap dhul jayenge…

.. this is when i stopped listening. There was nothing wrong with any of them. Indifference. Ignorance. Needs. Cravings. Only human. If Shiney Ahuja bangs a maid, he is just fulfilling his sexual needs for his wife is out of the country. If its forceful, may be its his fetish. What is wrong with being forceful? Doesn’t your boss use force on you at work. And you girlfriend who forces you to remember every damn date about “when we did what”. The knife on the vegetables. Rising from bad to good. Forced actions are everywhere around you. The system itself forces you to earn. Otherwise no man would ever work. A man works to earn, so that he can pay for his needs. But the very manner he earns or prepares himself to earn, he can apply to his needs too. Nothing wrong with that because he is just reciprocating. A junkie likes marijuana and music more than sex. So the system makes him an outcast. If he would just do what others do, that is earn and pay for his fuck, or earn, feed his wife, fuck her and make more losers like himself, system would find nothing wrong with that. But just when he reverses the direction of force between system and himself, he is a criminal, why? If all individuals are equally homo sapiens, they naturally have the right to self thought and way of life. Making a system for everything from food to sex is for those who cannot think themselves. On the contrary, those who think otherwise are termed unwise! Sex for the sake of sex. Amen!

Cyber crime in Indore

Recently I was planning to do the research on cyber presence of Indore. However I never dreamt that the first piece of information will be a nasty cyber crime committed by student of prestigious institute of Indore.

I was totally left shocked in morning when my eye caught the following headline in today’s DB star (local edition of Dainik Bhaskar, indore). It was reported that students of the computer science

SGSITS indore

SGSITS indore

department of prestigious SGSITS (Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science) had created a fake profile of their HoD professor Wasim Khan. It included a huge community of hundreds of students which even girls. Many objectionable comments were written on profile related to professor’s personal life. Even false allegations such as demand of sexual favors by the professor were reported to be present on the profile.

Such a heinous and cheap crime could never be expected from the students of institute whose alumni have earned name both in India and abroad. Also this is the same institute which has delivered maximum number of top B-School candidates including IIM. Probably these innocent devils don’t know the price they will have to pay for their crime. They may lose their academic career, be sent to prison for 5 years or even have to pay Rs. 10 lakhs in fine according to IT act of India. Already the cyber crime cell of Indore is working on the case.

Moreover the point which aches me as a tech-geek is the blunt use of technology here. Gone are the days when cyber crimes used to include intelligent cracking, Trojans and Worms furnished by a heavy amount of hot pursuit of genius criminals. Nearly all the cyber crimes done in India have been related to misuse of Orkut, emails or mms. No glamour of code visible. Anyhow, for all those who further plan to engage in such act of dumbness here are the links to the cyber act of India. Do go through them and be prepared for the consequences.

2009 End of Terrorism or the Beginning

Say no to terrorism

Say no to terrorism

This year has been quite drastic for the terrorism. Many well known (or rather notorious) names have been eliminated from the World of fame of terrorism. LTTE along with its fierce and strong leader has left its heavenly abode. Taliban is facing a do or die situation. Also on the political front the extremist wings all over the world appears to be seemingly backing up. BJP, well known for its extremist agenda, has lost the ground completely to so called moderate Congress. At global level some good news are finally arriving from the troubled Middle East with the call for peace in Israeli PM Netanyahu’s foreign policy speech.

However these minor victories still count too less for all the wars humanity is yet to face before taking the final sigh of relief and peace. The major players are yet to learn some good lessons. There is nothing so great about creating a demon and then destroying it. USA can’t go unblemished for its doing in Iraq so as Pakistan for its creation. Even so called peace loving nations like India have some dark secrets to face. On the other hand, trigger happy countries like North Korea are still major threat. Even a pebble thrown by these countries may cause huge damage to humanity as it has done in past two World Wars. Also the recent racist attacks on Indian students in Australia are another facet of this violence and hatred deep inside human mind.

So is there any solution possible for all this mess. Well hope fully there is. And guess what? it has been revealed in the measure taken by us while facing recession. All the inefficient ones need to be diluted and restructured. The primary objective which the international

Netanyahu-showing the path of peace

Netanyahu-showing the path of peace

bodies and key players need to put in front of them is to find the troublesome areas of the world and put a check on them. Rather than using ruthless force to deal with them they should adopt them, flourish and nurture them till they grow enough to take care of their own. But before doing this all these powerful nations need to cleanse their own souls. All the greed whether for oil or land need to be set aside. With the whole world knit together (as proven by the economic crisis) they should become the Big Brother in real sense i.e. by winning respect rather than mere force. And then only we can hope a new beginning… else it shall be the beginning of another chapter in terrorism.

9 most important things in life..

Everyone has a life. It may suck. It may be cool. But everyone does have a life. You get its importance when you are dying, normally. Some people get it sooner too. The essence of life is not in thinking about what language you got to master next, or which girl you got to bang next, or what kind of friends do you have, or do you have any friends, os where is your life heading to, or will you survive in future in the kind of competition we have nowadays, or any any elegy whatsoever. The song of life does not need your mental permission before it takes a new rythm or when it stops having any new ones. You get it when you stop thinking. Stop thinking. You have been thinkng all your life. Mundane. Labs. Projects. MBA. Biotechnology. Pioneers. Existentialism. Everything is rubbish. Friends. No friends. IPL. Roger Federer. Bramhaputra. Facebook. Life. ?. When will it stop dude? Don’t you ever feel you have had enough of all of this? If you don’t then when will it be enough? Ever thought about the “catch 22″ of life? Too many questions? You question yourself infinitely more than this. And who do you find answering it. No one. Good and Bad. Karma. Objectivism. Capitalism. Too much nonsense is it? Constant effort to ameliorate the standard of everything around you. But what is around you? There is nothing around you. Father. Mother. Brother. Friends. No. Specious. But nothing in reality. And what do you say is real. You? When i say “You”, you think of the inner self and the outer self. Stop thinking dude. Go to the nearest river and watch the big fish swimming. You sight it and guess where it will be next. And you are wrong. Don’t you see it? Why do you think this much? You were trained to by someone who was trained in the same fashion and got you as result of marital or non-marital sex. Jack Nicholson didn’t know that the girl who he thought was his sister was actually his mother and his father actually abandoned him by birth till a biographer digged deeper. He didn’t care. It doesn’t mean you should stop caring who gave birth to you and you win 3 oscars. If you stop thinking you will know what i mean. its high time you stopped making such stupid lists as the title suggests and start breathing. Do what you like.
